Spiral Tarot - Two of Wands

In the Spiral Tarot’s 2 of Wands, a man sits at a
table on the embankment of a river. His body is facing
the viewer as he turns his head toward the left. He
rests his head in his left hand and a blooming wand in
his right hand. On the table in front of him is a
crudely colored hand-drawn globe. The man does not
look like a contemporary from the 20th or 21st
century. It looks like he is wearing either a mantilla
from centuries past or drab looking academic regalia
sans mortar board. His body language communicates
boredom, longing, and dreaming. Because the man is
sitting at a table facing the viewer rather than
looking out over the water, the card has a
particularly passive feel to it. In the background of
the card, over the river or ocean, the skyline of a
modern city rises in the distance. The distant city
has an unfinished, dreamlike quality to it as though it
only exists in the man’s imagination.
LWB: “A successful business man is looking to a future
vision. Divinatory meaning: Success in partnerships
and business affairs. There is a sense of
restlessness; moving on to new deals and plans
possible.”
I don’t get the sense of restlessness that the LWB
refers to. I think the man is in a dreamlike state,
contemplating nothing in particular. It is important
that he gives himself the opportunity to let his mind
drift. He is looking toward the left which suggests
that he is in the state of mind where great ideas,
insights, inspiration, and creativity can suddenly get
sparked. I think the Spiral 2 of Wands emphasizes the
importance of patience, contemplation and deliberation
in the creative process. Unfortunately, in the modern
world with its busy schedules, thinking time isn’t
valued as highly as activity. The 2 of Wands reminds
us that some things just can’t be forced. Sometimes a
day of thinking and doing nothing is exactly what we
need to come up with a really great vision.
