In the 2 of Wands of the Hudes Tarot, a young man
stands in a field of green. In the background of the
card we see an ancient map of the North Pole and the
Arctic Ocean. Apart from the Pole itself, the map
features no land. In the surrounding ocean, we see
whales spewing water, swishing their gigantic tails
as they appear on the ocean’s surface. The young man’s
rounded baby face and page boy haircut suggest that he
is particularly young and inexperienced. He is facing
the left while he’s holding a wand in each hand. His
straight posture and firm grip on the wands suggest
that he thinks that he will be able to compensate for
his lack of experience through intuition and
determination. I think it’s important to note that he
holds the upright, planted wand in his right hand
while he’s using the wand in his left hand. To me this
symbolism suggests that it is not yet time to take
action. It’s important not to rush through this
preparatory stage, because the young man is engaged in
important inner work which will ultimately contribute
to the success of his project or adventure. The young
man wears a long green silk scarf around his
shoulders: With careful planning he will be able to
make his dreams come to fruition, even though he’s
still “green behind the ears.”
The LWB is particularly thin on explanations:
“The
balance between risk and safety.”
I think the LWB meaning is nicely reflected in the
symbolism of how the young man uses the two wands. If
he is planning an exploration of the Arctic, he will
have to take many potential risks into consideration
and decide whether he is really up to it, whether it's
worth it. It’s easy to imagine big dreams and visions,
the hard part is to make them manifest. And whatever
he decide, there is always a certain risk involved: he
may fail, or he may miss out on another possibility.
Also, beware of what you wish for: You may actually
get it! Still, the young man wears gloves (to me, this
indicates a certain level of readiness) and suggests
that eventually he will pursue his dream.
