Whimsical Tarot - Ten of Rods
by Dorothy Morrison, illus. Mary Hanson-Roberts
Publisher: US Games Systems, Inc.

Scene: The Princess from “The Goose Girl”

A well-dressed blonde girl kneels on the riverbank, lost and forlorn beneath a weeping willow tree. Her handkerchief is being swept away by the current. Her face buried in her hands, she doesn’t see the crow flying just overhead.

Like the rest of the Rods in this deck, the card border is orange with vines in autumn colors. Suit symbols frame the image.

LWB: Burdens, usually those belonging to other people.

Book Excerpts:
“When the Ten of Rods shows up in a spread, flex all emotional muscles and muster every shred of mental strength. Otherwise, you may feel as if the weight of the world is on your shoulders. … Understand that you are not responsible for problems that don’t involve you. You played no part in creating these unpleasant circumstances, and it isn’t your job to sort them out.”

My take on it:
I’m not at all familiar with this story, but fortunately the book includes a summary. Just when everything seemed to be going her way the princess was betrayed by someone she trusted, and now everything is falling apart. The burden she bears is purely an emotional one. We often find reserves of physical strength easier than we can emotional fortitude. Eventually we reach a point where we have to say “Enough!” The only way to move beyond this point is to let something go, no matter how difficult that may be.
