Whimsical Tarot - Nine of Rods
by Dorothy Morrison, illus. Mary Hanson-Roberts
Publisher: US Games Systems, Inc.

Scene: Little Boy Blue

A barefoot boy in an orange shirt and patched jeans lies asleep in front of a large haystack, bugle at his side. A cow nibbles on corn plants behind him. Further back, his sheep have broken their fence and a hungry wolf is heading for them.

Like the rest of the Rods in this deck, the card border is orange with vines in autumn colors. Suit symbols frame the image.

LWB: Take responsibility; keep a watchful eye on both material and emotional possessions.

Book Excerpts:
“If the Nine of Rods slips into your spread, be warned that danger – at least in regard to your possessions – is on the loose, and it’s headed straight for your door. … Now is a good time to secure valuables, lock doors, and keep an eye on your wallet or purse. … Keep a watchful eye on loved ones, especially children and pets. … Planning for emergencies takes a little extra time, but it’s the very best way to ensure a safe and pleasant trip.”

My take on it:
Little Boy Blue is supposed to be keeping an eye on his livestock, but not realizing the dangers, he dropped his guard enough to take a nap. Apparently this kid isn’t a Boy Scout, or he would know the importance of their motto, “Be Prepared.”

Of course, when we’re not ready for trouble is when we’re most vulnerable to it. Now’s not the time to relax and take things for granted. There may not be any immediate danger, but don’t forget to allow for that possibility in the future. Double check safety issues and take the time to make contingency plans now so you aren’t scrambling without a clue what to do if an emergency does come up.
