The Vertigo Tarot - Lovers
1995 D.C. Comics

The brown of the card has been pushed back to the edges by the bright reds and yellows and golds of this card. You can almost feel heat rising from it. The couple embracing in this card is identified by Rachel Pollack as Chantinelle and Tani from the graphic novel "Hellraiser." Seems that Chantinelle is a demon from hell, and Tani is an angel from heaven. Sounds like West Side Story, and tit is. Their story is one of love and sex superseding the rules and regulations of their respective societies (heaven and hell, which are viewed in the story to be really the same, since they are places where power has run amok).

The torsos of the two lovers are slender and willowy--both very androgynous, so this card could easily portray two women, two men, or a man and a woman. The figures are almost identical to one another. While the torsos and arms and hands are human, the torsos become, at the groin, columns of gilded light. Their heads are overlarge eggshells, appearing to be very fragile. In fact, they seem to be exploding into shared light. The figures, their arms wrapped around, and through, one another, seem to merge in this explosive light. The only difference between the two are the tiny wings on one, and the piercing horns on the other.

The ability of love to cause two to become one, to overcome all differences, all obstacles, and to be made truly sacred.
