Sacred Circle Tarot - Lovers
A Celtic Pagan Journey by Anna Franklin, illustrated by Paul Mason
ISBN: 1-56718-457-X
Publisher: Llewellyn

Description:
The lovers are shown dancing around a maypole, which is on the left side of the card. The woman is dressed in bright red and your eye is naturally drawn to her. She is crowned with a circlet of flowers. The man is all in green and blends into the grassy background somewhat. There is a large Hawthorn tree in the distance and a dove flies through the air. There is a plant in the foreground that is identified as a cuckoo pint.

This card represents Beltane - May Day. The two, as May King and Queen, are off to their sacred marriage to symbolically aid in the fertility of the fields and the community. The maypole is "a phallic symbol of fertility and revelry" which survives to this day. The overall feel of this card is innocent sexuality that is tied to the earth and all living things. The King & Queen are carefree and joyous. There is an invitation in their faces to come join in the revels.

From the book, Page 73:
"The Journey of the Fool: In card five, the Druid, the fool learned about balancing opposites and polarities. In this card, the Lovers, he learns about the marriage and fusion of those opposites to make a single whole. He now connects with the Divine Spirit and becomes aware of the transcendence of the spirit and the development of the eternal soul through the choices he makes."

For me this card represents choices and cautions to think carefully before going forward. Although this card seems to be carefree and happy, there are always drawbacks to be considered. If you rush headlong into a new situation you run the risk of regret. The lovers here don't seem to be conflicted - they are firm on their path and regret is the farthest thing from their minds. But the Fool is still on his journey and there are more lessons to be learned.
