The Fool in Whimsical is the Scarecrow from the
Wizard of Oz. I find him appearing, in illustration as well as
"feel", more like the Scarecrow in the book rather than the movie. He
carries Dorothy's basket. He's stepped off the yellow brick road; he's
chasing a butterfly off a grassy cliff into a chasm filled with fire.
Toto stands nearby with an expression of
astonishment on his face; *his* feet are firmly on the road.
Meanwhile, the crows are beginning to feast in the Scarecrow's field;
one sneeringly caws from the frame upon which the Scarecrow had been
mounted.
Some of the images that come to mind from this
card: There is always a chorus of doubters, of nay-sayers, anytime
we're willing to follow our dreams rather than keep to the well
trodden path, isn't there? And like the crows, the doubters may be
more than happy to feast upon our leavings while deriding us.
Here, interestingly, the chasm into which the
Fool steps is filled with flame..and as we know, that's Scarecrow's
biggest fear. Perhaps it's only be risking, by daring, our biggest
fears, that we can truly become the Fool.
Everyone needs a true friend to help him/her
stay grounded. In this case, Toto isn't trying to stop the Fool; he's
not sneering at him; he's standing by, a bit astonished, but there
waiting; a friend.
From the LWB
"Child like innocence, taking time to smell the
roses; a spiritual journey."
