Fey Tarot - Five of Wands
Artwork: Mara Aghem; Concepts: Riccardo Minetti
Publisher: Lo Scarabeo

Description: Two pairs of flying pixies play tug-o-war with a rope draped over a tree branch, while a fifth sprite waits her turn, or serves as referee.

Simple Meaning: “Struggle, training, friendly competition, physical ability, exercise.”

Advanced Meaning: “Even when we confront others, it is not necessary to fight nastily. To desire victory, and to do everything possible in order to obtain it, does not prevent us from being friends with our opponents. … Furthermore, this card recalls the need to continually keep in shape…”

My take on it: There’s a real sense of play here, competing for fun and sport rather than the more serious tone seen in many other decks. One of the faeries is clearly smiling. The tree branch is bending under the strain, but it’s a flexible green branch that will snap back when they’re done. While there may be winners and losers, everyone is doing their best, with no animosity or anger toward each other. If your competition seems to strong, don’t give up; seek help from another with common goals. And even if it doesn’t work out, maybe next time will be better.
